Cell phones have become a real major expense for many people sometimes creeping over $100 per month for data intensive plans for smartphones. Luckily, there are alternatives and one of the most compelling may be a plan offered by FreedomPop which calls themselves an free phone service.
FreedomPop may sound like a small company but it has been around since 2011 and was backed by the founder of Skype and therefore has noble origins. The free plans that are offered by FreedomPop are over the internet and offer unlimited data, phone, and text over your home wifi network. While other plans offer the last two, free phone service over wifi is unique to FreedomPop and is already a wonderful way to save, particularly if you are making most of your phone calls from the privacy of your own home or a connected workplace.
A new unlimited plan expands on these offerings for a $20 monthly fee that covers unlimited talk, text, and data from wherever you are, even when you are away from your wifi connection. The only disadvantage of this system is that you will have to have your phone data speed reduced one you use up 1 gb of data in a month and your speed will then be decreased from a 4g network to a 3g network. Most people won’t feel a significant difference however when doing so. In addition, there is still the option of using the wifi network that you are connected too for higher speeds when you are able to. For the $20 fee you are just no longer limited by access to a wifi network for your phone calls. This freedom is what led to the name FreedomPop and is quite versatile as an affordable cell phone solution.
You can bring your own phone to the FreedomPop network if you want or can buy one of your own but you will have to make sure that the phone works with the FreedomPop which uses Sprint’s network. Many people choose to carryover their existing phones from other pay plans to add other family members or simply purchase an out of contract phone.
There is obviously no need to spend significant amounts of money on a phone plan with the new FreedomPop plan and because it uses Sprint’s network the plan is just as good as the offerings on the major four networks. However, there are those cost savings to benefit from.
